FlyCRE assessments document visible, spectral, and thermal conditions present at the time of data collection. Multispectral and thermal observations identify patterns and anomalies for further evaluation; they do not independently determine actual fuel-moisture content, combustibility, wildfire probability, or fire-code compliance unless supported by an appropriately calibrated and validated methodology. FlyCRE assessments do not replace inspections, approvals, certifications, or compliance determinations issued by CAL FIRE, a local fire authority, an authority having jurisdiction, or another appropriately qualified professional. Requirements must be evaluated against the property’s approved fuel-modification plan and applicable local regulations.

California Defensible Space and Fuel Modification FAQs

What are defensible space Zones 0, 1, and 2 in California?

Zone 0 is the ember-resistant zone within 5 feet of a structure. Zone 1 extends from the structure to 30 feet, and Zone 2 extends from 30 to 100 feet or to the property line. Requirements vary by jurisdiction and by local fire authority fuel modification plans. FlyCRE documents conditions across all zones in a single aerial capture.

What is a fuel modification zone?

A fuel modification zone is a strip of land, commonly 100 to 170 feet, where vegetation is modified or maintained to slow an approaching fire and give firefighters defensible ground. Many California communities in the wildland urban interface have recorded fuel modification plans that HOAs and property owners are responsible for maintaining.

How often should fuel modification zones be inspected?

Local fire authorities commonly inspect annually, and vegetation conditions change season to season. Repeat aerial capture before and after maintenance work, and before peak fire season, creates a documented timeline of conditions rather than a single snapshot.

​Does an aerial assessment replace a fire authority inspection?
